Journal

The journal is where we write about the questions that come up across the counter and by email: what a vase is worth and how to find out, why Satsuma is not porcelain, what a crackle glaze is and is not, how to buy Asian antiques from abroad without a customs surprise, and what a shipwreck cargo does and does not tell you about a pot. The guides are the reference shelf — reign marks, bases, condition, the periods — and are revised as we learn; the journal is the running commentary, dated, and left as written. Every post is built from museum records and from pieces that have passed through our hands, and where a claim could not be confirmed from a primary source the post says so rather than repeating it.
